Paintings Conservation

Tears and punctures severely compromise a painting’s structural integrity. Working under high magnification, we realign and re-weave torn canvas threads individually, restoring tension and planar stability without relying on heavy, invasive patches. Missing paint along the fracture line is textured and retouched using completely reversible conservation mediums, blending the damage away while keeping the surrounding original artwork untouched.

Torn Canvas

While fine aging cracks are a natural feature of many paintings, cracking that begins to lift, tent, or flake signals active structural failure leading to permanent loss of original material. We carefully secure and bond them back into place to retain maximum historical material. To restore visual harmony, tiny losses along crack networks are filled to match the surrounding surface texture and retouched with reversible medium. The treatment remains minimal and can be safely removed at any point in the future.

Torn Canvas

Over time, canvas fibres degrade, margins become brittle along the stretcher edges, and severe tears or environmental stress can leave the canvas deformed, or too fragile to hold adequate tension. When the primary support fails, the paint layer above is put at direct risk. Our studio provides tailored structural interventions governed by the principle of minimal intervention, strengthening the foundation while respecting the integrity of the original textile.

Structural treatments

Atmospheric pollutants dull paint surfaces, while aged natural varnishes turn yellow and brown, distorting the artist's original palette and tonal balance. Our studio cleans both traditional and contemporary works using tailored aqueous systems, gels, and micro-emulsions formulated specifically for each medium.
